WARREN, Mich. – Mackenzie Sawicki stole the show in game two, leading Macomb Softball to a 6-0 victory as the Monarchs secured a Friday (April 24) split with the Oakland Community College Owls. The Monarchs, now 14-17 overall and 10-11 in the MCCAA East, let game one get away, losing a 6-2 lead in a narrow 7-6 setback.
With the split, the Monarchs remained in third place and in the driver's seat for a potential playoff spot in one of the upcoming Great Lakes District Tournaments (A or B). The Great Lakes District Tournaments will be played May 6-8 at Marathan Diamonds in Findlay, Ohio.
GAME ONE: OCC 7, Macomb 6
A six-run third inning put the Monarchs in front, 6-2, but untimely miscues allowed the Owls to soar back for a 7-6 victory.
Jacqueline Asmar capped off the thrilling third inning with a three-run home run over the wall in right center. The home run was Asmar's first at the collegiate level.
Asmar's three RBIs paced the Monarchs in game one while
Alexa Garofalo,
Aubrey Rich,
Kailey Viviano and
Alexa Yaklin all doubled in the opener. Garafolo and Viviano led an eight-hit effort with two hits each.
GAME TWO: Macomb 6, OCC 0
Sawicki was in control throughout in the circle, holding the Owls to five hits across seven shutout innings to move to 3-1 on the season. The redshirt freshman struck out a pair of batters and kept the Owls off balance all game to help the Monarchs secure the split.
With Sawicki holding the Owls scoreless, Viviano started a six-run fourth inning with what would stand as the game-winning, two-RBI single to left field in the fourth.
Samantha Consiglio recorded an RBI single, followed by a RBI via fielder's choice off the bat of
Allison Wineski to make it 4-0 Monarchs.
Carissa Dossin made the most of her time in the starting lineup with a two-RBI single to left field to end the scoring in the fourth and give the Monarchs a 6-0 lead.
Dossin's 2-for-3 afternoon with two RBIs and a stolen base led the Monarchs in Friday's latter contest. Yaklin tied Dossin for the team lead in hits with two, going 2-for-3, while Viviano tied Dossin for a team-best in RBIs with two.
