Softball Sweeps SC4 in High Scoring Doubleheader

The Monarchs combined for 30 runs on 39 hits in their best offensive showing of the season.

MARYSVILLE, Mich. – Despite Mother Nature's best efforts to force another postponement, Macomb Softball wrapped up its season series with St. Clair County Community College on Saturday (April 25) from Marysville City Park. The Monarchs defeated the Skippers 14-11 in game one before notching a 16-11 victory in the latter contest to finish the season 6-0 against the Skippers.

The high octane victories moved Macomb's record to 16-17 overall and 12-11 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action. In all, the Monarchs tallied 30 runs on 39 hits across the two games in Marysville to win a pair and keep pace in the Great Lakes District A/B playoff race.

GAME ONE: Macomb 14, SC4 11
The host Skippers scored in every inning except the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough as a nine run top of the sixth inning by the Monarchs gave the Blue & White a 14-11 victory. Saturday's opener featured a combined 38 hits between the two sides.

Kailey Viviano and Addison Wodowski each hit a two-run home run in the offensive eruption. For Viviano, it capped off a 4-for-5, three RBI game one that included a double. The home run was Viviano's fourth of the season. Wodowski's home run was her second of the season as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Alexa Garofalo was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI while Ryleigh Davis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Carissa Dossin recorded an RBI double and Alexa Yaklin went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. Jacqueline Asmar also had a multi-hit game for the Monarchs, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Ariana Wlodeck survived a hot Skippers lineup to pick up the win in the circle for Macomb, pitching all seven innings and striking out four batters. The win was her 10th of the season.

GAME TWO: Macomb 16, SC4 11
Much like the opener, the two sides combined for 27 runs and 38 hits in game two. The Monarchs led 9-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning, but SC4 plated five in the frame to get within one at 9-8. Despite the strong inning, the Skippers failed to claim the lead and capitalize on five errors by the Monarchs as the Blue & White poured it on late for the 16-11 victory.

Wodowski led the way for the Monarchs in game two, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Dossin went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, while Garofalo went 3-for-6 with a double and three runs scored. Asmar was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-RBI double in the second inning. Samantha Consiglio drove in a pair while Viviano tallied two RBIs and three runs scored. Aubrey Rich also recorded an RBI and scored a run for the Monarchs in the lead-off spot.

Wlodeck came on in relief in game two and earned her second victory of the day to move to 11-5 on the season. The sophomore tossed the final four-and-a-third and held the Skippers to two earned to earn the victory.

UP NEXT: At Schoolcraft on Tuesday
The Monarchs travel to Ward Church in Northville to take on Schoolcraft College on Tuesday (April 28) at 3 p.m. The Monarchs and Ocelots will pick up a suspended game from April 6 with Schoolcraft leading 14-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning before playing a scheduled doubleheader.
