Monarchs Fall Twice to Mott on Sophomore Day

The Bears rallied late in both games to defeat the Monarchs twice in Warren.

WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Softball wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader against MCCAA Eastern Conference champion Mott Community College on Saturday (May 2) in Warren. The Monarchs dropped both games of the doubleheader, 12-5 and 8-6, despite holding a late lead in each contest. With the setbacks, the Monarchs conclude the regular season with an 18-21 overall record and 14-16 mark in MCCAA East play. 

Following the twin bill, the Monarchs honored their nine member sophomore class on Sophomore Day. The sophomores honored were: Alexa Garofalo, Zoe Hunt, Aubrey Rich, Madalyn Roberson, Savanna Smith, Kailey Viviano, Allison Wineski, Ariana Wlodeck and Alexa Yaklin.

GAME ONE: Mott 12, Macomb 5
The Monarchs led 5-3 heading into the top of the sixth, but the Bears scored twice in that frame to tie the game before plating seven in the top of the seventh to pull away with the victory. The Monarchs were plagued by six errors in the field in the game one loss. 

Ariana Wlodeck went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run, her first of the season and first in a Monarch uniform. Alexa Garafalo led the Monarchs offensively as she went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, ,a double and two runs scored. Aubrey Rich also drove in a run for the Monarchs as she went 1-for-4 in the opener.

Madalyn Roberson pitched all seven innings in the circle for Macomb, striking out four. 

GAME TWO: Mott 8, Macomb 6
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Macomb held a slim 6-5 advantage. The Bears, however, rallied one more time, plating three runs to take an 8-6 lead and the win. The Monarchs had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but failed to get any runs across in the frame. 

Zoe Hunt led the Monarchs offensively as she went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a pair of runs scored. Maddie McKee was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple and Jacqueline Asmar was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. 

Mackenzie Sawicki pitched the first six innings for the Monarchs before being relieved by Roberson. Both hurlers recorded a strikeout each. 

UP NEXT: Great Lakes District A Tournament
The Monarchs open Great Lakes District A Tournament play Wednesday (May 6) against the MCCAA North No. 2 seed Muskegon Community College. First pitch from Marathon Diamonds in Findlay, Ohio, is set for 11 a.m. with the winner facing Cuyahoga Community College at 1:15 p.m. later that afternoon. (Tournament Website)
