Volleyball Opens 'The Den' With Home Split, Records 17 Aces in Nightcap Victory

Monarchs drop 3-1 contest to Bay before bouncing back with 3-1 victory over Rochester Christian JV.

WARREN, Mich. – For the first time since October 2024, Macomb Volleyball played a home match at the newly renovated Athletics & Expo Center on Macomb's South Campus. The Monarchs hosted fellow MCCAA and NJCAA Region 12 member, Bay College, along with the Rochester Christian University JV team in a tri-match in Warren on Friday (Sept. 4) inside The Den. 

The Monarchs took on Bay in the first match of the day and dropped a 3-1 decision to visitors from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. 

In Friday's second tilt, Bay defeated Rochester Christian in five sets before the final match of the day saw Macomb defeat the Warriors in four sets. The split moved Macomb's record to 2-7 and snapped a five-match skid. 

MATCH ONE: Bay 3, Macomb 1 (24-26, 25-11, 14-25, 26-28)
A back-and-forth opening set got the day going as Bay squeaked out a 26-24 win. The Monarchs responded in the second set with a dominant 25-11 victory, but it was the Norse that took the final two frames with set scores of 25-14 and a narrow 28-26 decision to post the win. 

Ava Hunt had a strong match for Macomb as she tallied 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Brooke Baker and Alaina Kubiak had 12 kills each while Baker recorded 13 digs for her latest career double-double. Korin Hutton registered 37 assists and 10 digs for a double-double of her own while Madison Martin chipped in seven kills. 

Delaney Heflin paced the defense with 15 digs and Gisela Hanna added 11. Baker and Bethany Dean had two blocks each at the net. 

MATCH TWO: Macomb 3, Rochester Christian JV 1 (25-16, 33-31, 21-25, 25-10)
The Monarchs opened their second match of the day by cruising to a 25-16 set one victory. In set two, the Monarch shad to dig deep as they fended off multiple set points by the Warriors and secured a thrilling 33-31 victory. After dropping the third set, 25-21, the Blue and White dominated set four to the tune of a 25-10 final to earn their second victory of the season. 

Hunt and Martin led Macomb offensively with 12 kills each while Baker had 11 and Hutton notched 37 assists for the second straight match. The Monarchs tallied 17 aces as a team and were led by Hanna with five.

Defensively, Heflin had a career-high 29 digs while Hunt and Baker added 12 and 11, respectively. Martin and Dean had three blocks to round out Friday night's leaders.

The Monarchs open up MCCAA Eastern Conference play Wednesday (Sept. 9) at Henry Ford College. First serve in Dearborn is scheduled for 7 p.m.
