Kirk Carolan

Kirk Carolan enters his third season as an assistant coach with Macomb Women’s Basketball in 2023-24. The longtime educator and coach joined Macomb prior to the 2021-22 season and helped guide the Monarchs to back-to-back NJCAA Region XII Tournament appearances.  

In addition to the postseason appearance, Carolan also assisted in coaching All-Region, All-MCCAA and MCCAA Eastern Conference First Team performers, DeBraya Edwards and Amy Jackson, as well as MCCAA Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Valina Hudgins.

Prior to Macomb, Carolan was most recently the head girls basketball coach at Berkley High School from 2017-2021. Under his guidance, Berkley won two Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Blue Championships and appeared in the District Finals in 2021. Carolan also coached an All-State performer and numerous All-OAA selections. 

Carolan has been an avid teacher of the game for many years and has been a member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) since 2016. Carolan was a volunteer coach for Shrine Catholic C.Y.O. girls basketball for 10 years, and for a couple of years Carolan was active in the AAU scene as a U15 coach with Midwest Athletics. 

As a lifelong educator, Carolan spent the bulk of his career at nearby L’Anse Creuse Public Schools where he held numerous leadership roles. From 2005-2016, Carolan was an Associate Principal at Middle School-Central and, prior to that, was a Physical Education/Health Teacher and K-12 Physical Education/Health Coordinator within the district. He also spent one year as the Athletic Director at Memphis Community Schools.

On top of the numerous leadership roles, Carolan also coached Basketball, Football & Track throughout the better part of three decades.  

Carolan was twice named Teacher of the Year during his time at L’Anse Creuse. The first in 2000 as the district’s Teacher of the Year where he was part of the Top 24 State Competition and the latter in 2002 when he was tabbed MAHPERD/Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. 

Carolan retired as a full-time educator in 2016. 

Carolan has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Community Recreation and Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
