Warren, Mich. — Macomb Community College has tabbed
Jeff Jayson as head men's basketball coach, athletic director
Bryan Rizzo announced on Thursday (April 16). Jayson, well-known in the Southeast Michigan basketball community and beyond for his impact as a coach and a player, becomes the ninth head coach in program history.
A highly successful coach at the high school and AAU levels, Jayson brings a championship resume to Macomb, along with deep recruiting ties throughout Michigan and a proven commitment to student-athlete development both on and off the court.
"Jeff is a proven winner and an outstanding leader," said Rizzo. "His track record of building championship programs, developing players for the next level and prioritizing academics makes him an ideal fit for Macomb. We are excited to have Jeff at the helm of our men's basketball program."
Most recently in his second stint as boys' varsity head coach at Waterford Mott High School, Jayson guided the Corsairs to a historic run that featured a pair of Lakes Valley Conference (LVC) championships in 2024 and 2025. The 2025 campaign culminated in a record-breaking 22 wins and the program's second ever appearance in a MHSAA Regional Final.
In all, Jayson was at the helm of Waterford Mott for nine seasons across his two stints (2011-2017 & 2023-2026) and is responsible for both of the program's Regional Finals appearances while producing three All-State selections and sending a host of student-athletes to play at the collegiate level.
Jayson's coaching experience extends to the AAU/travel circuit where he has been a coach with R.E.A.C.H. Legends Youth Program since 2015, a hallmark organization in Michigan that has produced and been home to some of the top names to come out of the state. With R.E.A.C.H., Jayson has coached multiple teams while maintaining a strong focus on player development, recruitment and college exposure.
Prior to his coaching days, Jayson enjoyed a heralded collegiate career at Aquinas College where he was a two-time NAIA All-American, two-time All-Academic Team member and a three-time WHAC First Team All-Conference selection. To date, Jayson holds the Aquinas record for 3-point field goals made (332) and is fifth on the all-time scoring list with 1,919 points. For his efforts, Jayson was inducted into the Coach Terry Bocian AQ Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.
Jayson also served as a graduate assistant coach at Aquinas for one season following his playing days. During that season, Jayson assisted with on-court coaching and developed travel itineraries while monitoring student-athlete academic performance.
In addition to his coaching and playing success, Jayson has been a physical education and social studies teacher in the Waterford Public School District for the past 17 years and currently serves as a physical education teacher at Waterford Mott.
"I'm thrilled to lead the Macomb Men's Basketball program," said Jayson. "My first priority is connecting with our players and building the relationships that lead to success on and off the court. We're ready to get back in the gym and build on the great tradition established here at Macomb."
Jayson will begin his duties immediately as he prepares for the upcoming season.
