WARREN, Mich. – After being down 11 early, Macomb Men's Basketball rallied for a 90-77 home win over Muskegon Community College on Monday (Nov. 22) in Warren. Down 26-15 midway through the first half, the Monarchs fought back to tie the game at halftime, 39-39, before outscoring the visiting Jayhawks 51-38 in the latter stanza for the 13-point victory.
The thrilling victory keeps the Monarchs perfect on the season at 6-0. The loss drops the Jayhawks to 3-2 overall on the young season.
Trailing by as many as 11 (26-15) with 8:21 remaining in the first half, the Monarchs regrouped behind great leadership to close the opening frame on a 24-13 run to knot the game up at 39-39 entering the locker room. Elijah Belle (Detroit, Mich./Davenport) got the run started with five straight points, while teammates Jiovanni Miles (Novi, Mich./Wisconsin-Green Bay) and John Ukomadu (Southfield, Mich./Vincennes) did their part to help the Monarchs earn the tie at the break.
Ukomadu led the Monarchs at the half with 12 points, while Belle and Miles checked in with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Monarchs trailed by as many as six on several occasions in the second half, including a two-possession deficit (66-60) with 9:00 remaining that led to an eventual timeout called by first-year head coach Hassan Nizam. After the timeout, the Monarchs buckled down on defense to outscore the Jayhawks 30-11 the rest of the way to earn their sixth victory of the season.
Ukomadu led all Monarchs with a season-high 25 points and added eight rebounds, three assists, and a pair of blocks in 30 minutes of action. Miles was everywhere for the Monarchs as the sophomore earned season-high totals in points (23) and rebounds (11) to accompany a five-assist effort, while Belle added an equal 23 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Dante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) gave Nizam and the Monarchs great minutes on his way to six points and five rebounds in the win.
The Monarchs are back in action Wednesday (Nov. 24) for a home matinee contest against MCCAA West opponent, Glen Oaks Community College. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Warren with a live stream scheduled to begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the 1:00 p.m. women's game.
