WARREN, Mich. – That's how you bounce back! One night after falling to Siena Heights, Macomb Women's Basketball bounced back in style with an 83-76 home win over the Lakers of Mid Michigan College Friday (Dec. 10) in Warren. With the win, the Monarchs improve their record to 6-4 overall. The Lakers fell to 5-4 after suffering the setback to the Monarchs.
With their minds set on shaking off a tough loss, the Monarchs were a focused team from the opening tip and raced out to a 26-18 edge after one quarter of play. The strong first quarter, combined with a couple hot hands offensively, led to a 40-33 advantage at halftime for the Blue & White. As a team, the Monarchs shot 48.3% in the opening half and were led by DeBraya Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Oakland CC) and Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) who poured in a combined 24 points through the first 20 minutes of play.
Second half action saw the Monarchs pull ahead by as many as 16 points (71-55) with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Despite the large lead, the game was far from over as the Lakers went on a blistering 17-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 72-71 lead with 3:41 remaining. The Monarchs responded as the Edwards and Jackson duo combined to tally nine straight points in less than two minutes of action to help the Blue & White take an 80-72 lead with just 2:03 left in the contest.
The resilience and late burst paid off as the Monarchs held on from there to post a hard-fought 83-76 victory over a quality Lakers squad.
DeBraya Edwards led all scorers with a game-high and new career-high 31 points. The standout sophomore added nine rebounds, six assists and recorded three blocks to continue an incredible first season at Macomb. Amy Jackson followed with a new career-high of her own with 28 points, nine rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes of play. The sharpshooting Flat Rock product shot 6-for-8 from 3-point territory to post her best offensive effort since arriving on campus last year.
Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) was a force in the paint throughout Friday's game with a team-high 10 rebounds and three blocks. Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) posted a well-rounded game with eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Monarchs return to game action Friday (Dec. 17) with a road tilt at Alma College's JV. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Alma.
