FLINT, Mich. – This team never quits! Down by 13 in the fourth quarter, Macomb Women's Basketball mounted a massive comeback to earn a 66-63 road win over the host Mott Community College Bears Wednesday (Jan. 19). The incredible comeback victory lifts the Monarchs to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in MCCAA East action. Mott also entered the game undefeated in league play and dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the MCCAA East after falling to the Monarchs.
One streak survived and another was halted Wednesday as the Monarchs won their fifth straight while the Bears saw their six-game winning streak end in the 66-63 decision.
A four-point halftime deficit, 31-27, turned into a 53-42 hole through three quarters of play after the Monarchs were outscored 22-15 in the third. The host Bears stretched their lead to 13 less than a minute into the fourth quarter before the Monarchs turned the game around with timely baskets and a relentless defensive effort. Sophomore star DeBraya Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Roseville) led the fourth quarter charge, while several other Monarchs stepped up when it was needed the most down the stretch.
After cutting the Bears lead to six at 57-51, the tandem of Edwards and Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) connected on back-to-back triples to bring the game even with just over five minutes remaining. The Monarchs would jump in front by as many as four, 61-57, before the Bears mounted a mini comeback of their own to regain the lead with 90 seconds left in the final quarter.
Trailing 63-61 with just under a minute to play, Edwards drove the lane and kicked it out to an open Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) whose corner 3-pointer found the bottom of the net to give the Monarchs a 64-63 lead with 49 seconds on the clock. The Monarchs defense took it from there, getting three consecutive stops to outscore the Bears 24-10 in the final frame to earn the three-point victory.
Edwards narrowly missed out on a triple-double once again as the sophomore posted a stat-stuffing line of 21 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals in 36 minutes of action. Jackson followed Edwards with 14 points, three assists and three rebounds, while Thomas checked in with nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from 3-point land to help propel the Monarchs to 3-0 in league play. Gabriella DiPiazza (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) recorded eight points each and Imani McGlown (Clinton Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) pulled down seven rebounds (four offensive) in the winning effort.
