1-0! WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS SC4 IN MCCAA OPENER, 73-67!

WARREN, Mich. – Down 11-0 early, Macomb Women's Basketball put their grit on display by earning a 73-67 comeback victory in the MCCAA opener over the Skippers of St. Clair County Community College Wednesday (Jan. 5) in Warren. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in MCCAA Eastern Conference play. The visiting Skippers fell to 8-6 and 1-1 in league play after seeing the Monarchs take control midway through the first quarter.

Down 11-0 to start the contest, the Monarchs battled back to only trail by four (18-14) at the end of the first quarter thanks to team defense and a balanced offensive attack from their standout tandem of DeBraya Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Roseville) and Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock). The Monarchs kept pouring it on from there and outscored the Skippers 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 36-30 lead at the halftime break.

Edwards and Jackson combined to tally 22 in the first half points to lead the Monarchs first half rally.

In the second half, the Monarchs led by as many as many 17 points before the Skippers mounted a comeback of their own to pull within four in the final two minutes before a timely Amari Davis-Dobbs (Eastpointe, Mich./Lincoln) 3-pointer helped seal the conference-opening victory.

Jackson paced the Monarchs with 24 points (six 3PM) and added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Edwards – the MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week in the final week of December – dropped in 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds, five assists, five steals and a block in 37 minutes of action Wednesday evening. Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) and Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) recorded eight points each, while Davis-Dobbs tallied six points on a pair of 3-pointers in a solid debut for the Monarchs.
