Defense Shines as #7 Men’s Basketball Cruises to 75-42 Win in Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – The No. 7 Monarchs held the opposition to four field goals in the second half and a 22.6% shooting night overall to cruise to a 75-42 win over the Southwestern Michigan College Roadrunners Friday (Nov. 4) at the Lake Michigan Red Hawk Showcase. The 33-point win lifted the Monarchs to 2-0 on the season ahead of their date with the host Red Hawks to cap off the showcase Saturday at 5 p.m.

With Friday's setback, the Roadrunners shifted to an even 1-1 on the young season.

The Monarchs took a 38-23 lead into the halftime break behind 61.5% shooting from the floor while holding the Roadrunners to a 27.6% clip over the game's first 20 minutes. In the second half, the Monarchs defense only allowed four field goals and held the Roadrunners to 16.7% shooting in the frame to cruise to the 33-point neutral-site victory.

In addition to holding the Roadrunners to 22.6% shooting overall, the Monarchs defense also forced 19 turnovers and turned the miscues into a 24-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Shooting over 60% in the first half and over 50% for the game, the Monarchs attacked the basket early and often to take home a 42-14 points in the paint edge and also put their depth on display with a decisive 31-2 advantage in bench scoring.

Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich./Warren De La Salle) led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including a 2-for-2 mark from downtown, while Jaylen Daughtery (Oak Park, Mich./Ferndale) corralled a game-high eight rebounds to help limit the Roadrunners opportunities Friday night. Aidan Rubio (Flint, Mich./Goodrich/DME Academy) tallied 10 points and added four rebounds in the winning effort.

Linden Holder (Warren, Mich./Warren De La Salle) followed with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and added three assists, while Antonio King (Southfield, Mich./Southfield A&T) chipped in with seven points and five boards. Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) recorded six points and seven rebounds, and Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) added six points  each with Maxey leading the team defensively with four steals.
