SANBORN, NY – No. 9 Macomb Men's Basketball dropped a tightly-contested road tilt at No. 4 Niagara County Community College by a 62-54 final Saturday (Dec. 10) in Sanborn, NY. The game was the first of two for the Monarchs at Niagara County's T-Wolves Holiday Classic.
The Monarchs, now 9-3 on the season, will return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday against Monroe Community College (NY). Tip time for Sunday's game was originally scheduled for 1p.m. but was pushed back due to Saturday's delays.
The host Thunderwolves remained undefeated at 10-0 on the season after Saturday's eight-point win.
Down 19-6 early, the ninth-ranked Monarchs adjusted to shakeup in their lineup and battled back to the tune of a 15-1 run to take a 21-20 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half. The Thunderwolves closed the half on a 14-5 run of their own to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room.
After erasing the halftime deficit, the Monarchs and Thunderwolves went back-and-forth in a game that never saw the lead grow to more than two possessions over the final 15 minutes of action.
Aidan Rubio (Flint, Mich./Goodrich/DME Academy) led the Monarchs with 17 points and
Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) followed with 16 of his own as the pair combined for 33 of the team's 54 points on the evening., including all seven of the team's 3-pointers.
Jaylen Daughtery (Oak Park, Mich./Ferndale) paced a balanced effort on the glass with eight rebounds. Rubio and
Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) checked in with five boards each.
As part of a well-rounded game, Rubio also led the team in assists (3) and steals (2).
Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) posted seven points and three rebounds in the hard-fought setback.
