BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Another game, another stingy defensive performance as Macomb Women's Basketball won its sixth straight and improved to 9-1 on the season with a 64-28 road win at Kellogg Community College Wednesday (Dec. 7). The 28 points scored by Kellogg tied for the eighth fewest points allowed in program history.
On Saturday (Dec. 3), the Monarchs held North Central Michigan to 25 points – tied for fifth fewest allowed in program history. The program record is 17 points against set on Nov. 5, 2016 in a 70-17 win over Washtenaw Community College.
Wednesday's 64-28 win was a product of continued strong play on both ends of the floor as the Monarchs dished out 18 assists on 25 made baskets offensively, while forcing 25 turnovers and holding the host Bruins to 22.2% shooting on the defensive end.
The Monarchs broke the game open in the second quarter when they outscored the Bruins 20-2 in the frame to take a commanding 34-14 lead into the halftime break.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Monarchs closed the game strong, outscoring the Bruins 14-4 over the final 10 minutes of the game to earn the 36-point road win.
The Monarchs tallied a 23-3 edge in points off turnovers and a 20-4 points in the paint advantage to pick up their sixth consecutive win and their ninth win in 10 contests this season. The Monarchs shot 42.4% for the game, including a 37% mark from 3-point territory.
Amy Jackson (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) poured in a game-high 16 points on four 3-pointers and added four assists, while
Ryleigh Sanom (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) posted a new career-high 13 points on four 3-pointers to accompany three assists and two rebounds.
Jasmine Ellis (Hazel Park, Mich./Michigan Math & Science) followed Jackson and Sanom in double figures with 10 points. Ellis also pulled down six rebounds, two shy of the team-best eight boards corralled by MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week,
Tamia Tounsel (Shelby Twp., Mich./Dakota).
Valina Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) shot 50% from the field to record nine points and added five rebounds, while
Rylee Thomas (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) dished out a team-best five assists.
Jaelynn Jones (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) notched a balanced four points, three assists and three rebounds in the road win.
The Monarchs return to game action Dec. 17 at home opposite Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Tip-off for the Dec. 17 contest is slated for 1 p.m. at the Sports & Expo Center.
