WARREN, Mich. – Macomb Baseball waited patiently for its 2022 home opener and—when the opportunity finally presented itself—the Monarchs made the most of it, winning game one by an 11-10 final in eight innings in walk-off fashion over the visiting Mott Community College Bears. The Monarchs went on to post a 10-4 lead in Tuesday's (March 31) nightcap before the game was halted due to darkness in the top of the sixth inning.
With Tuesday's walk-off win, the Monarchs improve to 2-12 overall and 1-2 in the MCCAA East. The visiting Bears fell to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the game one setback.
GAME ONE: Macomb 11, Mott 10 (Final – 8 innings)
Walk it off,
Ty Mychek! Mychek (Ray Twp., Mich./Romeo), a freshman outfielder, came up massive for the Monarchs when he connected on a line drive to deep left field that brought
Joey Tedesco (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./GP North/Hillsdale) to lift the Blue & White to an 11-10 walk-off win in extra innings. Prior to Mychek's game-winning base hit, the Monarchs were able to battle back from an early 4-0 hole when amassed a seven-run second inning behind a host of Mott errors and RBI singles by Tedesco and
Tom Burt (Clinton, Mich./Clinton).
Mott would score a run in the top of the third to bring the score to 7-5 before the Monarchs answered with two runs of their own as Tedesco and
Jack Lyndrup (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) drove in a run each to extend the lead to 9-5. Mott battled back to eventually tie the game, 10-10, and send the game to extras.
In the eighth inning, Tedesco continued his strong day on the diamond with a walk and stolen base to get into scoring position. After
Reese Rinna (Richmond, Mich./Richmond) was intentionally walked, Mychek stepped to the plate to deliver the walk-off hit that brought Tedesco in from second and the rest of the Monarchs charging out of the dugout to celebrate.
Jack Demetral (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) came on in relief and put together arguably his best performance at the collegiate level by holding Mott to one run on six hits over five innings of work. The strong outing lifted Demetral to his first win of the campaign and first MCCAA Eastern Conference victory. Tuesday's win was Demetral's second overall in a Monarch uniform.
Offensively, Burt and Tedesco paced the action by driving in a pair of runs each in a game where seven different Monarchs recorded a hit. Defensively, the Monarchs made several great plays, led by strong play out of middle infielders
Jeremy Pudlik (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) and
Harrison Ryan (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North).
