ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Monarchs posted seven runs over the first three innings and never looked back on a day where the Blue & White erupted for 17 runs on 18 hits in a 17-5 non-conference road win at Concordia-Ann Arbor JV. The 17 runs and 18 hits were both season bests for the Monarchs (6-20).
Gavin Nareski (Fenton, Mich./Holly/Kankakee) got the start and went on to post his first win in a Macomb uniform and second collegiate victory (recorded a win last year at Kankakee CC). The freshman right-handed pitcher earned the win by holding Concordia to four hits and one earned run while punching out four over five innings of work.
Nareski didn't have to sweat Tuesday's decision as a host of Monarchs enjoyed season-best performances at the plate to help the Blue & White hold a comfortable lead throughout.
The Monarchs were able to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on four walks and a wild pitch that brought both runs in to score. After Concordia responded with a run in the home half of the first,
Mason Spezia (China Twp., Mich./St. Clair) and
Benjamin Dillabough (Warren, Mich./Warren Mott) helped break the game open in the top of the second with back-to-back singles that brought a total of three runners in to score. Spezia struck first with a two-RBI single to center, while Dillabough followed one batter later with a line drive to leftfield that plated Spezia and gave the Monarchs an early 5-1 lead.
The Monarchs would put two more runs on the board in the third inning when
Terry Dean (Davison, Mich./Davison) stepped to the plate and delivered with a two-out, two-RBI double to right field that brought
Adam Amodei (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and future Concordia Cardinal
Harrison Ryan (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) around to score. The two-RBI double extended the Monarchs advantage to six at 7-1 through two and a half innings played.
Concordia scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 7-2, and after a scoreless fourth, Amodei recorded his third RBI of the season with a fifth inning single to left that brought
Trace Hudson (Farmington, Mich./Lapeer) home to lift the Monarchs in front, 8-2.
Five runs would come in to score in the sixth inning thanks to run-scoring doubles off the bats of Amodei and Dillabough and a two-RBI single by Hudson. The five-run sixth pushed the Monarchs in front by a commanding 13-2 advantage. Concordia notched three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-5, but the Monarchs stayed hot as
Rocco Comito (Macomb, Mich./Marine City Cardinal Mooney) recorded a two-RBI single the following inning to give the Monarchs a 15-5 edge after seven innings of play. The Monarchs would tack on two more runs in the ninth inning as Dilladough connected on his second double of the day to drive in a run, while
Jeremy Pudlik (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) rounded out the scoring with a RBI single to right that plated Dillabough and brought the score to its eventual final of 17-5.
On the mound,
Jack Gohlke (Macomb, Mich./Warren De La Salle) and
Ryan Polega (Macomb, Mich./Henry Ford II) were strong in relief with Gohlke recording a scoreless eighth and Polega striking out two as part of a scoreless ninth.
In all, six Monarchs had two-or-more RBIs, led by Amodei and Dillabough with three runs batted in each. Amodei, Dillabough and Spezia paced the Monarchs with three hits each. Spezia went a perfect 3-for-3 with five runs scored, three walks and two RBIs.
