DETROIT, Mich. – On Friday (April 15), Macomb Baseball traveled to the famed corner of Michigan & Trumbull for a road doubleheader against the Schoolcraft College Ocelots on yet another wild weather day in Michigan this season. The host Ocelots would take both games to start the four-game conference series, winning game one, 12-2, before coming back to steal the nightcap by a 6-5 final.
With the pair of losses, the Monarchs fall to 6-22 overall and 4-10 in the MCCAA East. The Ocelots jumped to 10-19 overall and 5-9 in the MCCAA East with the wins.
GAME ONE: Schoolcraft 12, Macomb 2 (5 innings)
Harrison Ryan (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) and
Tom Burt (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) paced the Monarchs with two hits each, accounting for four of the team's six hits in the opener. Ryan put the Monarchs first run on the board with a fourth inning RBI double to right that scored Burt. One batter later,
Josh Medrano (Surprise, Az./Shadow Ridge) maintained his offensive uptick as of late with a RBI single to center that brought Ryan in to score from second.
Rocco Comito (Macomb, Mich./Marine City Cardinal Mooney) also had a hit in the series opener, a single to left field in the fifth inning.
GAME TWO: Schoolcraft 6, Macomb 5
Joey Tedesco (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./GP North/Hillsdale) highlighted game two with a 2-for-2 performance that included a double and three RBIs. The pitcher/utility player played a strong center field in game two and recorded a run and a walk as part of a well-rounded game.
Jeremy Pudlik (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) equaled Tedesco with two hits, while
Adam Amodei (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Chippewa Valley),
Josh Medrano and
Ty Mychek (Ray Twp., Mich./Romeo) all added a hit each.
The Monarchs took the lead on a couple occasions in game two, doing so the first time on a two-run second inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Medrano got the scoring started with a RBI double while Amodei followed one batter later with a single to left to bring Medrano in to score. Tedesco singled in a run an inning later to extend the Monarchs lead to 3-1 through two and a half innings played.
After three Ocelots runs allowed the hosts to take a 4-3 lead, the Monarchs answered with two runs in the fifth inning, both coming on a Tedesco double to left field. The two-run double by Tedesco gave the Monarchs a 5-4 advantage, but the Ocelots responded one last time by plating two in the sixth inning to earn a comeback win over the Monarchs. The pitching trio of
Ryan VanSlambrouck (Macomb, Mich./Dakota),
Jack Demetral (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and
Bryan Masterson (Roseville, Mich./Roseville) combined to only allow three earned runs and struck out 10 Ocelots in Friday's latter contest.
