ADRIAN, Mich. – After dropping game one by a narrow 3-2 margin, Macomb Baseball never gave up and battled back to earn a 7-5 victory in game two to split Thursday's (April 28) non-conference doubleheader at Siena Heights JV. With the split, the Monarchs saw their record shift to 12-26 overall one day before the Blue & White return to Adrian for the start of their four-game conference series with Jackson College.
GAME ONE: Siena Heights JV 3, Macomb 2
The Monarchs got on the board first in the opener, but the host Saints would have an answer a half-inning later and would go on to record a two-run fifth inning to earn the 3-2 game one victory.
Six Monarchs recorded a hit as Rocco Comito (Macomb, Mich./Marine City Cardinal Mooney) led the way with a hit and the team's lone RBI.
Ty Mychek (Ray Twp., Mich./Romeo) connected on the third triple of his freshman campaign as part of a 1-for-2 effort with a run scored, while Jeremy Pudlik (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott), Josh Medrano (Surprise, Az./Shadow Ridge), Terry Dean (Davison, Mich./Davison) and Benjamin Dillabough (Warren, Mich./Warren Mott) all had a hit in the opener.
Jack Gohlke (Macomb, Mich./Warren De La Salle) was impressive as the freshman right-hander tossed all six innings on his way to scattering seven hits while striking out five Saints in the narrow setback.
GAME TWO: Macomb 7, Siena Heights JV 5
Trailing 5-2 entering the seventh and final inning, the Monarchs refused to back down and went on to bring five runs across to earn a 7-5 comeback victory in the nightcap. A host of walks drawn by patient at-bats and singles by Logan Rybarczyk (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Harrison Ryan (Macomb, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) helped the Monarchs earn the win in the seventh. Ryan's single drove in Connor Armstrong (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Chippewa Valley) to bring the Monarchs to within one, 5-4, while Josh Medrano and Rocco Comito drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to put the Blue & White in front at 6-5.
Tom Burt (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) put the ball in play one batter later and brought home Ty Mychek on a fielder's choice to give the Monarchs a two-run lead, 7-5, entering the bottom of the seventh.
After coming on to record the final out in the sixth, freshman right-hander Ryan Polega (Macomb, Mich./Henry Ford II) worked an impressive seventh inning, shutting down the Saints with two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory. While Polega slammed the door shut behind one and a third innings of perfect ball, the pitching combination of Bryan Masterson (Roseville, Mich./Roseville), Jadon Hill (Macomb, Mich./Armada) and Brendan Bos (Howell, Mich./Howell) held the Saints to three earned runs on eight hits to help the Monarchs earn the hard-fought win.
Comito paced the Monarchs with two RBIs, while Mychek hit his fourth triple of the season in the comeback victory.
