HIGHLIGHTS vs. #6 TERRA STATE
HIGHLIGHTS vs. LAKE MICHIGAN
WARREN, Mich. – The 2022 season got underway in style Thursday (Aug. 25) for Macomb Volleyball as the Monarchs kicked off the campaign with a thrilling five-set upset victory over the nation's sixth-ranked team, the Titans of Terra State Community College. The season-opening win highlighted an exciting day on campus as the Monarchs hosted a tri-match that featured the visiting Titans and the Lake Michigan College Red Hawks.
Unfortunately for the Monarchs, momentum from their opening win over the Titans didn't carry over to the tri-match finale as the Red Hawks took the contest in three sets.
MACOMB 3, #6 TERRA STATE 2 (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 15-3)
The Monarchs jumped out to an early two sets to none lead behind a 25-18 first set triumph and a 25-19 decision in the second set. A sweep wasn't in order as the sixth-ranked Titans eventually evened up the match to force a deciding fifth set. Despite letting their 2-0 lead slip away, the Monarchs put their will to win on display and cruised to an impressive 15-3 win in the fifth frame to earn the hard-fought upset victory.
Haile Polisano (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Becca Weiss (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) were impressive in their respective collegiate debuts. Both Polisano and Weiss joined the double-double club in their first college match as Polisano posted 14 digs and a team-leading 13 kills, while Weiss racked up a team-best 20 assists to accompany 11 digs.
Khloee Stoll (Macomb, Mich./Anchor Bay) paced the Monarchs defensively with 29 digs and fellow returner Natalie Husson (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) started her sophomore season with six kills and three block assists in the winning effort. Jordan Turner (Highland Park, Mich./Thurston), a transfer from NCAA D2 Wilmington University, amassed eight kills to go along with four solo blocks and three block assists, while former Macomb Women's Basketball standout Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) impressed with four solo blocks in the opener.
LAKE MICHIGAN 3, MACOMB 0 (11-25, 18-25, 13-25)
A slow start doomed the Monarchs in Thursday's final match as the Red Hawks improved to 5-1 on the season with a three-set victory. Haile Polisano once again led the charge with 13 kills, while Khloee Stoll posted an equal 13 digs in the setback. Polisano and Kaylee Lathrop (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) checked in with seven digs each and Becca Weiss accounted for six digs of her own to round out the top performers against the Red Hawks.
