WARREN, Mich. – The 11
th ranked Monarchs made it a 2-0 week with a 78-62 home victory over the visiting Oakland Community College Raiders Saturday (Jan. 28) in Warren. The win follows Wednesday's road victory at No. 8 St. Clair County Community College.
With the 2-0 week, the Monarchs sit at 15-5 overall and 3-2 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action. The Raiders fell to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play after dropping Saturday's contest by 16 points.
Aside from a brief OCC spurt in the opening half, the 11
th ranked Monarchs were in control throughout and led by as many as 19 points in the conference battle.
In the first half, the Monarchs jumped out to a 13 point lead before the Raiders made their push to slice their deficit to three at the break, 40-37. Second half action saw the Monarchs hold the Raiders to three points over the first six minutes of play and only 25 points total over the final 20 minutes for the 16-point victory.
The Monarchs forced 17 Raider turnovers to earn a 27-13 edge in points off turnovers and attacked the basket throughout the afternoon on their way to a 42-14 points in the paint advantage.
Jaylen Daughtery (Oak Park, Mich./Ferndale) posted a season-high 14 points and did so in highlight reel fashion with several dunks, including a windmill late in the second half that proved as the exclamation point in Saturday's win.
Daughtery was followed by four other Monarchs in double figures as
Aidan Rubio (Flint, Mich./Goodrich/DME Academy) checked in with 13 points,
Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich./De La Salle) tallied 12 and
Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich./Country Day) and
Linden Holder (Warren, Mich./De La Salle) rounded it out with 10 points each.
Daughtery, Rubio and
Cameron McEvans (Southfield, Mich./Southfield A&T) all hauled in six rebounds to pace the Monarchs on the glass. Holder doled out a team-best four assists.
As a team, the Monarchs shot 48.2% from the field and held the Raiders to 38.6% shooting (25% in the second half).
MCCAA East play rolls on Wednesday (Feb. 1) as the Monarchs host Wayne County for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
