BY THE NUMBERS: 9
After an 82-81 road win over then No. 8 SC4 and a 78-62 home victory over OCC, Macomb Men's Basketball shifted up two spots to No.
9 in this week's NJCAA Division II Rankings. The victories lifted the Monarchs to 15-5 overall and 3-2 in the MCCAA East, while the top-10 road win was the first in the young career of second year head coach
Hassan Nizam.
BY THE NUMBERS: 20
Freshman guard and former Warren De La Salle star
Linden Holder was on fire in Wednesday's (Jan. 25) top-10 road win! Holder connected on all four of his first half attempts from downtown on his way to a team-high
20 points. Holder tallied 12 of his 20 points in the opening half to help the Monarchs lead by as many as 21 points early in the game.
NEARING THE HALFWAY POINT
The first half of Eastern Conference action will come to a close this week when the Monarchs take on Wayne Country (Wed.) and Jackson (Sat.). By the end of the week, the Monarchs will have played all teams in the league and will cycle back through one more round of games before postseason play begins in early March.
STAT LEADERS
Tamario Adley paces a balanced Monarchs squad with 12.8 points per game, while
Aidan Rubio and
Juwan Maxey check in at 10.7 and 10.4 points per contest, respectively.
Jaylen Daughtery anchors the effort on the boards with 5.8 rebounds per game and
Tymias Williams follows closely with an average of 5.7 boards per game. Linden Holder averages nearly four assists per game while Rubio averages 2.1 blocks.
DAUGHTERY COMES UP BIG
Sophomore forward
Jaylen Daughtery helped lead the Monarchs to a 2-0 week behind a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in Wednesday's 82-81 road win at No. 8 SC4 and a team-best 14 points and seven rebounds in Saturday's home victory over OCC. Wednesday's double-double was Daughtery's 11th in a Macomb uniform.
TURNOVERS PLAY A MAJOR ROLE
It's no secret that taking care of the ball leads to plenty of success on the hardwood. This season, the Monarchs are a perfect 13-0 when committing less turnovers than their opponent and are a combined 2-5 when either tying or having more turnovers than the opposition.
A LOOK AT: WAYNE COUNTY
A talented team that returns a bevy of firepower from last year, the Wayne County Community College District Wildcats enter the week 3-2 in league play and 11-5 overall after most recently suffering a narrow setback at home to No. 15 Mott. Sincere Key's 15.2 points per game leads six Wildcats averaging at least nine points per contest.
A LOOK AT: JACKSON
The Jackson College Jets enter the week on a high note after knocking off then No. 9 Mott in Flint over the weekend to move to 12-6 overall and 1-4 in the MCCAA East. The Jets average 82 points per game and do so by attacking the basket (ranked 22nd out of 24 teams in the MCCAA in 3-point attempts and fourth in field goal percentage - 47.4). Akhwari Smith leads five Jets in double figures with 16.2 points per game.
HUNGER GAMES & SOPHOMORE DAY
Believe it or not, the 2022-23 regular season is nearing an end and only four home games remain (including Wednesday's game vs. Wayne County). On Feb. 18, Macomb will host its MCCAA Hunger Games doubleheader -- all fans will get in FREE with a non-perishable food item donation. Sophomore Day will follow in the home finale on Feb. 28.
