GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Monarchs battled tough but ultimately lost both matches on Sunday (Oct. 1) to wrap up their time at the GRCC Raider Challenge. The Monarchs, now 6-9 on the season, dropped Sunday's opener to McHenry County College, 3-0, before falling in four sets to Kellogg Community College out of the MCCAA Western Conference.
McHenry County 3, Macomb 0 (23-25, 18-25, 20-25)
The Monarchs challenging weekend slate continued Sunday with a match against the NJCAA Division II preseason No. 8 Scots of McHenry County College. The preseason top-10 team snuck by the Monarchs in the opening set, 25-23, before taking sets two and three by tallies of 25-18 and 25-20, respectively.
Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) carried over Saturday's strong play into Sunday with another double-digit kill performance. The sophomore middle hitter racked up 11 kills on 24 attacks with only two errors to help keep things close early.
Adeline Tresnak (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) had six kills and added eight digs and
Nikole Nikolova (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) led the defensive charge with 15 digs.
Paige Elliott (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Country Day) paced the Monarchs in aces with three, while Nikolova, Tresnak and
Becca Weiss (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) had two aces each.
Kellogg 3, Macomb 1 (22-25, 25-21, 12-25, 23-25)
Another four-set marathon match ended narrowly in favor of the opposition as the Bruins of Kellogg Community College edged the Monarchs in the fourth set, 25-23, to earn the victory.
Grace Amoe (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) was outstanding in the nightcap, posting 10 error-free kills on 24 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage. The freshman middle added a solo block and a block assist for one of her best matches in a Monarch uniform.
Chante Hudgins once again led the kills department with 12 and
Adeline Tresnak checked in with 10 kills.
Paige Elliott tallied 37 assists to accompany 14 digs, while
Nikole Nikolova set a new career-high with 36 digs in the four-set match.
