Resilient Monarchs Top SC4 on the Road, Hudgins and Tresnak Record 16 Kills Each

The Monarchs put together a phenomenal performance on the road and controlled the match to earn a 3-1 road win at SC4.

PORT HURON, Mich. – Oh, what a night! Macomb Volleyball put together a complete performance to upend the St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Skippers in four sets on Wednesday (Oct. 4) in Port Huron. The Monarchs won by set scores of 28-26, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-22 and earned the first set win in come-from-behind fashion after trailing by double digits late.

The win lifts the Monarchs to 4-3 in conference play and 8-9 overall. The host Skippers fell to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the MCCAA East with the four-set setback to the Monarchs.

As part of a resilient effort throughout the night, the Monarchs set the tone early by erasing a double-digit SC4 lead to comeback and win the first set by a 28-26 final. SC4 responded by negating a large Macomb lead in the second set to earn a comeback win of their own, 25-23, but the Monarchs were not going to be denied and bounced back to win set three, 25-16, and later won set set four by a 25-22 final to upend the Skippers.

The tandem of Chante Hudgins (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) and Adeline Tresnak (Dryden, Mich./Dryden) hammered down 16 kills each to combine for 32 of the Monarchs' 51 kills on the night. Hudgins recorded 16 kills on 35 attempts and only committed two errors for a .400 hitting percentage. The reigning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week was unstoppable throughout the match and added a team-best five aces, a solo block and two block assists as part of an incredible night.

Tresnak posted another double-double after recording 17 digs to go along with her team-high-tying 16 kills.

Nikole Nikolova (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) led an impressive defensive charge for the Monarchs with 35 digs, while Mallory Cardinale (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) and Paige Elliott (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Country Day) followed with 17 digs and 14 digs, respectively.

Elliott added four kills on 10 attempts with no errors out of the setter position and posted 39 assists to join Tresnak in the double-double category as part of an amazing effort quarterbacking the Monarchs offense.

Grace Amoe (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) continued her impressive play with five kills and four block assists and Katarina Gavric (Canton, Mich./Salem) followed with three block assists to round out a great night for the Monarchs.

"This is the team we can be," exclaimed fifth-year Lauren Doogie Duquette after the match. "Proud is an understatement. This group has worked so hard and they earned this moment tonight. We have to build off of this moving forward and have a big challenge ahead Monday at home against Mott."

The Monarchs host the Mott Bears Monday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. in Warren at the Sports & Expo Center.
