CENTREVILLE, Mich. – One game removed from a 55-point win at North Central Michigan, Macomb Women's Basketball continued its strong play with a 76-33 road victory at Glen Oaks Community College on Friday (Dec. 15). The Monarchs took the lead early and never looked back for their second wire-to-wire win in as many games to improve to 5-3 on the season.
The win was also the second in a row by 40 or more points and the fourth victory by double digits this season.
Momentum shifted firmly over to the Monarchs at the end of the opening quarter as freshman sharpshooter
Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) drained a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Blue & White a 19-12 lead through 10 minutes of action. Garon's triple – the first of four on the night by the freshman – also helped ignite a strong second quarter that resulted in the Monarchs outscoring the Vikings by an 18-7 margin to earn a 37-19 halftime advantage.
The impressive first half spilled over into the latter 20 minutes as the Monarchs outscored the Vikings by a 26-6 margin in the third quarter and later cruised to a 13-8 fourth quarter edge to earn the 76-33 road victory.
The Monarchs' defense was stingy throughout, forcing 22 turnovers while holding the Vikings to 10 field goals on 18.5% shooting overall. The strong defensive effort also resulted in a 24-3 advantage in points off turnovers and a 12-2 edge in fast break points.
Kamryn Richards (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 17 points while adding five assists and five rebounds.
MaKayla Downs (Chesterfield, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) posted a career-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Garon was in double digits for the third game in a row with 12 points.
Marissa Thomas (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg) checked in with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and
Tamia Tounsel (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) was close to joining those in double figures after recording eight points and adding four rebounds.
The Monarchs will remain on the west side of the state for a Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon contest at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
