PETOSKEY, Mich. – Now that's one way to begin a game! Macomb Women's Basketball started Saturday's (Dec. 9) game at North Central Michigan on a 24-0 run to cruise to an 86-31 road victory and move to 4-3 on the season. The Monarchs tallied 20 points over the game's first four minutes of play and opened the non-conference tilt on a 24-0 run before the host Timberwolves got their first points on the board at the 3:23 mark of the opening quarter.
The Timberwolves fell to 1-8 on the campaign with the 55-point setback.
After pouring in 24-straight to begin the game, the Monarchs went on to lead 26-2 after one quarter of play and held a staggering 49-8 advantage at the half. The Monarchs continued their strong play throughout, outscoring the Timberwolves by a 19-7 margin in the third quarter before cruising in the fourth for the victory.
The Monarchs were red-hot from the field from the opening tip and shot a season-best 52.2% overall and 43.5% from 3-point range. Defense led to offense early and often as the Monarchs forced 36 turnovers while recording 27 steals for a 38-4 edge in points off turnovers. The turnovers led to easy buckets on the other end and resulted in a 46-12 advantage in points in the paint for the Blue & White.
Tamia Tounsel (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) led a well-rounded Monarchs effort with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Three others followed in double figures scoring, including a pair of 15-point scorers in
Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) and
Marissa Thomas (Toledo, Ohio/Perrysburg). Garon buried five 3-pointers for the second time in as many days and added four rebounds and three steals, while Thomas doled out seven assists and grabbed three boards.
Hannah Roberts (Roseville, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) had arguably her best game in a Macomb uniform after posting a pair of career highs. Roberts netted a career-best 14 points and was disruptive defensively on her way to a career-high six steals in the win. The sophomore also added nine rebounds as part of a balanced day on the hardwood.
The Monarchs hit the road next weekend for another back-to-back with a Friday night contest at Glen Oaks at 7 p.m. and a Saturday matinee matchup at Kalamazoo Valley at 1 p.m.
