BY THE NUMBERS: 30
Coming up ACES! What an opening week from the service line for Macomb Volleyball! The Monarchs amassed and eye-popping
30 aces through their first three matches, led by career performances by
Becca Weiss with eight aces against Alpena in the opener and five from
Chante Hudgins in the team's second match against the Lumberjacks.
MONARCH REWIND
The 2023 edition of Macomb Volleyball got off to a strong start at last week's North Central Michigan Quad. The Monarchs went 2-1 in Petoskey with a pair of sweeps over Alpena and a narrow five-set loss to the host Timberwolves. The 2-1 start was a product of balanced play throughout the roster, including numerous breakout performances by newcomers (more on that later)!
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK!
Twice as nice! Congrats goes out to sophomore middle
Chante Hudgins and freshman setter
Paige Elliott for earning MCCAA Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors! Hudgins was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week after amassing 15 blocks to go along with 28 kills, while Elliott took home Offensive Player of the Week honors behind 106 assists and 26 digs.
LIVE STREAM THURSDAY
Can't make it to the home opener? Join us Thursday (Aug. 31) for the first live stream of the year on
MacombMonarchs.com/Watch as the Monarchs lift the lid on their home campaign against the visiting Crusaders of Madonna University. Watch from any device! For those coming to the match, general admission is $5.00 (cash only) at the door.
A LOOK AT: MADONNA RESERVES
Much like our opposition last week, not much is known about Thursday's opponent, the Madonna University Reserves, as both of the Crusaders' previous matches were canceled. The Monarchs last played the Crusaders in 2021 and dropped both matches.
STRONG DEBUTS
How about those new Monarchs! MCCAA East Offensive Player of the Week
Paige Elliott led a cast of talented newcomers last week with 106 assists, while
Adeline Tresnak and
Hadley Schaefer checked in with 22 kills and 16 kills, respectively. Defensively,
Nikole Nikolova recorded 35 digs, while the tandem of (Paige) Elliott and
Lexi Pogasic added 26 digs each and
Grace Amoe tallied 10 blocks.
AROUND THE MCCAA EAST
Time to take a look around the MCCAA Eastern Conference. While conference play doesn't get underway until early September, nearly every team from the MCCAA East has started its non-conference slate. Through the first two weeks of the season, the Monarchs sit at 2-1 and are followed closely by Henry Ford, Mott and St. Clair County with one win each (at the time of this release).
LOOKING AHEAD: NEXT WEEK
The homestand continues as the Monarchs remain at the Sports & Expo Center for a pair of matches next week. On Friday (Sept. 8), the Monarchs welcome in the Norse of Bay College for a 7 p.m. tilt. Then on Saturday, the Monarchs will host the North Central Michigan Timberwolves at 1 p.m. in an attempt to even the season series.
