WARREN, Mich. – The fifth-ranked Macomb Men's Basketball team was red-hot from the jump as the Monarchs cruised to a 113-74 victory over the No. 17 Bears of Mott Community College on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Sports & Expo Center. The 39-point win marked the Monarchs' largest margin of victory over Mott on record (since game-by-game scores/stats were kept at the beginning of the 2012-13 season).
The victory elevated the Monarchs to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in the MCCAA Eastern Conference. The Bears dropped to 1-2 in league play and 14-3 overall.
The Monarchs led 55-40 at the half and continued to pour it on in the latter stanza by outscoring the Bears 58-34 over the final twenty minutes of action to earn the 39-point win. The Monarchs shot a blistering 67.2% (41-of-61) from the field overall, including a 69% (20-of-29) mark in the first half.
While the Monarchs put up a season-best 113 points and eclipsed the century mark for the sixth time this season, it was team defense that set the tone for the day as the Bears were held to 36.8% shooting overall.
The Monarchs outscored the Bears in the paint, 62-22, and held a decisive bench points advantage, 45-24.
Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota/U-Indy) led six players in double figures with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Tate MacKenzie (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while
Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) posted an equal 16 points (3 3PM) to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
Nate Brown (Flint, Mich./Davison) stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists and
Parker Day (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage/GVSU) did much of the same with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Jotham Nweke (Oak Park, Mich./Loyola) rounded out the six players in double figures with 13 points, while
DaMaryon Fishburn (Detroit, Mich./Trillium Academy) recorded nine points and
Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) followed with eight points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) and
Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) combined for five points, four rebounds and three assists.
The fifth-ranked Monarchs remain in Warren for another Top 20 showdown as No. 20 St. Clair County Community College (SC4) visits the Sports & Expo Center Wednesday (Jan. 20) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The Skippers are 14-3 overall and are tied with Macomb atop the conference as the lone unbeatens at 3-0.
