WARREN – Macomb Women's Basketball returned to their home hardwood on Friday (Nov. 22) and cruised to a decisive 70-21 victory over the Lions of Community Christian College. The win lifted the Monarchs to 2-3 on the season. The Lions slid to 0-5 after suffering the 49-point setback.
Defense was the theme early and often as the Monarchs held the Lions to seven points on 12.5% shooting over the first 20 minutes of play. The stingy effort led to a 39-7 lead at the halftime break and propelled the Monarchs to 70-21 triumph as the Lions shot 11.3% for the contest, including an 8.7% mark from 3-point land and a 25.0% clip from the charity stripe.
The 21 points allowed was the fourth fewest allowed in program history, four more than the record of 17 points allowed against Washtenaw Community College on Nov. 5, 2016.
Vivian Urhobara (Lagos, Nigeria/Divine Light School) paced a balanced Monarch attack offensively with 12 points while adding a team-best eight rebounds.
Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) and
Asiyah Jihad (Farmington, Mich./North Farmington) followed with 11 points each and
A'Liyah Forris (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) checked in with eight.
Garon buried three triples while pulling down five rebounds and adding three assists, while Jihad hauled in seven boards and Forris dished out four assists to accompany four rebounds.
Ava Prasnjak (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) recorded a career-best and game-high six steals to pace the defensive effort and three other Monarchs chipped in with six points each to round out Friday's scoring leaders:
Vanessa Galovich (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica),
Zion Harris (Clinton Twp., Mich./Lakeview) and
Ruby Sandison (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II).
Janiya McWilliams (Detroit, Mich./Warren Fitzgerald) followed Prasnjak's six steal effort with five of her own in the runaway victory and
Nave'yah Knott (Detroit, Mich./University High) chipped in with five points and four rebounds.
The Monarchs return to action Tuesday (Nov. 26) when they host Madonna JV at 5:30 p.m.
