IOWA FALLS, Iowa – Jotham Nweke (Oak Park, Mich./Loyola) shot 8-of-10 from the field for a career-high 22 points to lead No. 4 Macomb Men's Basketball to an 87-76 victory over a well-coached Iowa Western Community College team on Saturday (Nov. 9) at Ellsworth's Dale Howard Classic. The win lifted the Monarchs to 3-0 on the young season and handed Iowa Western its first loss of the campaign.
Only dressing seven players, one less than the night prior in their impressive win over No. 7 Ellsworth, the Monarchs navigated a tough first half to only trail by three at the break, 38-35. The three-point halftime deficit was quickly erased in the latter stanza as the Monarchs poured in 52 points over the game's final 20 minutes to pull away for their third double-digit victory in as many games this season.
Nweke's 22 points led five Monarchs in double figures scoring as
DaMaryon Fishburn (Detroit, Mich./Trillium Academy) and
Jalen Jenkins (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) followed with 14 points each,
Marlon Williams (Benton Harbor, Mich./Benton Harbor) accounted for 13 and
Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) chipped in with 12.
Fishburn corralled eight rebounds and added a pair of assists and steals each, while Williams nearly had a triple-double with team-best marks in rebounds (10) and assists (7) to accompany his 13-point night.
The Monarchs shot 54.9% overall—52.6% from 3-point range—while connecting on 21 of 27 attempts from the charity stripe. Iowa Western was 6-of-11 at the free throw line while shooting 47.7% overall an 42.1% from 3-point territory.
