Maxey’s Career Day Paces Seven in Double Figures as No. 6 Men’s Basketball Rolls, 117-68

Sophomore guard Juwan Maxey poured in a career-high 28 points on eight 3-pointers to lead the sixth-ranked Monarchs over Jackson.

WARREN, Mich. – The first round of the MCCAA Eastern Conference slate came to a close in style as No. 6 Macomb Men's Basketball cruised to a 117-68 victory over Jackson College on Saturday (Feb. 3) in Warren. The win lifted the Monarchs to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the MCCAA East at the halfway point of league play. The visiting Jets fell to 9-12 overall and 1-6 in the conference after the 49-point setback.

The 117 points scored on Saturday tied for the fourth most in a single game in program history and tied for the most a Macomb team has scored against a MCCAA Eastern Conference opponent.

Juwan Maxey (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) was red-hot from the jump as the sophomore guard drained six 3-pointers in the first half alone on his way to posting a career-high 28 points. Maxey finished with eight 3-pointers made, tying for the third most triples made in a game in program history, and added five assists and five rebounds in his latest balanced effort on the hardwood. The sophomore guard was one of seven in double figures on the day for the Monarchs.

Maxey had 22 of his game-high-tying 28 points at the half to help give the Monarchs a 53-41 lead through 20 minutes of play. The Jets were hot to start Saturday's contest, making over 55% of their shots in the opening half to keep pace with the Monarchs.

The Monarchs turned their play up a notch in the second half and went on to outscore the Jets by a 64-27 margin in the frame while holding the visitors to 28.1% shooting.

As expected in a 49-point win, the Monarchs held massive advantages in several key categories, including: Points in the Paint: 54-26, Points off Turnovers: 27-4, Fast Break Points: 21-6 and Bench Points: 36-9.

Maxey wasn't the only Monarch to have a career day as fellow sophomore guard Kyle Millender (Detroit, Mich./DEPSA) flirted with a triple-double after recording 12 points, a career-high 11 assists and eight rebounds. Josh Hines (Macomb, Mich./Dakota/U-Indy) tallied a career-best 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added four assists and three steals and Tate MacKenzie (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) followed with 14 points, seven boards and a pair of blocks.

Tymias Williams (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) had 15 points, all coming in the second half, while Nate Brown (Flint, Mich./Davison) checked in with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists and Justin James (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) had 10 points, five assists and two rebounds.

The Monarchs remain home for the middle portion of a three-game homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 7) against Schoolcraft. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Warren.
