Women's Cross Country Fifth at MCCAA/NJCAA Region 12 Championships

Wessel and Dell Earn All-Region and All-MCCAA Honors, Rowan Tabbed All-MCCAA

GOODELLS, Mich. – The No. 20 Macomb Women's Cross Country team competed at the MCCAA/NJCAA Region 12 Championship meet on Friday (Oct. 24), finishing fifth in the team standings with 139 points. 

The event was hosted by St. Clair County Community College at Goodells County Park. Muskegon Community College won the meet with 69 points, outdistancing runner-up Grand Rapids Community College who posted 95 points. Macomb showed a great improvement from a year ago, when they finished eighth in the same meet.   

Sophomore Grace Wessel led Macomb individually with a sixth-place finish to earn All-MCCAA  and All-Region honors, running a 5K PR of 19:10.94 to surpass her previous-best by almost 40 seconds. 

Emma Dell broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time in her career Friday with a time of 19:39.06 to finish in 10th place and earn All-MCCAA and All-Region honors. 

Crossing the line next for the Monarchs was Erin Rowan who ran a personal best 20:04.39 to place 16th and earn All-MCCAA honors for the second straight year. 

Amber Watta placed 43rd with a personal best time of 21:16.1, while Erin Leverenz concluded the scoring with a 70th place finish at 23:20.5.

Thanks to their performance, the Macomb Women's Cross Country team is heading to the  NJCAA DII National Championship for the first time this decade (2020's). This year's national title race is held on Nov. 8 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Dell and Rowan are returning to the national meet for the second-straight year.
