No. 17 Monarchs Race Strong Against NCAA and NAIA Competition

Macomb ran its lone 6K race of the season Friday in Illinois.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 17 Macomb Women's Cross Country team returned to action for the first time in two weeks Friday evening (Sept. 19) at the Midwest Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University. 

The meet was contested at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill., against NAIA and NCAA DII institutions. Of note, Friday's race marked the first and only 6K of the season and the first of any Monarchs' career at the collegiate level.

Running shorthanded once again, the Monarchs finished sixth out of seven teams in the race, but defeated the only other NJCAA school in the talented field. The Monarchs finished with 174 points, finishing well ahead of the No. 2 NJCAA DIII team, Joliet Junior College, who checked in with 190 points. 

Emma Dell continued her strong sophomore campaign by leading the Monarchs across the finish line in 19th place individually with a time of 24:52.9. 

Amber Watta finished as the second scoring Monarch for the first time in her collegiate career, checking in at 26:46.8 in 44th place, while Erin Rowan was right behind in 45th place with a time of 26:48.7. 

Erin Leverenz finished in 83rd with a time of 30:39.6. Vanessa Sayers closed the scoring for the Monarchs with an 87th place finish, clocking a time of 34:54.6. 

The Monarchs will return to action next Friday (Sept. 26) when they host the MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship Baypoint Beach inside Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township. The men's race will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by the women's race at noon.
