PIQUA, Ohio – Asiyah Jihad tallied 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lead Macomb Women's Basketball past the host Chargers of Edison State Community College, 75-63, on Wednesday (Nov. 12) in Piqua, Ohio.
With the win, the Monarchs improved to 2-1 on the young season.
Four Monarchs reached double figures in the victory as Jihad's 26—one shy of her career-high—accounted for a game-high.
Janiya McWilliams posted 13 points and six rebounds, while
Mykenzi Harris chipped in 10 points.
Vanessa Galovich recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her collegiate career. Galovich also added a pair of blocks in what was her best performance in a Monarch uniform.
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle with the host Chargers leading 22-20. Edison State seemed to cool off in the second period, allowing the Monarchs to take a 40-35 halftime lead.
The teams traded baskets out of the locker room, playing to an even 17-17 third frame before the Monarchs closed the game strong by outscoring the Chargers in the fourth quarter, 18-11, to seal the win.
As a team, Macomb was 29-of-53 from the field, 5-of-12 from 3-point range and 12-of-15 from the charity stripe. The Chargers struggled shooting the 3-point territory, going just 1-of-14.
The Monarchs are back in action next Thursday (Nov. 20) at Madonna University to take on the Crusaders' JV squad. Tip-off from the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena in Livonia is set for 5:30 p.m.
