Women's Basketball Grinds Out Wire-to-Wire Victory Over GRCC

The Monarchs held GRCC to four first quarter points and never looked back in the 55-45 win.

SIDNEY, Mich. – Four straight! The Macomb Women's Basketball team earned their fourth win in a row Sunday (Nov. 30) with a 55-45 victory in wire-to-wire fashion over Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) at the Montcalm Shootout.

With the win, the Monarchs improve their record to 5-1 overall while GRCC falls to 6-3. The Monarchs finished the Montcalm Shootout with a 2-0 record after defeating GRCC on Sunday and previously-unbeaten Cuyahoga Community College on Saturday.

Both sides struggled offensively early as Macomb emerged with an 11-4 edge after one quarter of play and a 22-14 lead at the halftime break. The Monarchs' defense was stingy early and often, forcing 10 first half turnovers while holding GRCC to 0-of-12 shooting from 3-point range.

Despite being outscored 14-11 in the third quarter, the Monarchs put the game away in the fourth, posting their strongest frame offensively with 22 points to earn the 55-45 win.

Asiyah Jihad was a difference-maker on both ends of the floor with 20 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Jihad's 20 points was a game-high.

MyKenzi Harris added 13 points and six steals, while A'Liyah Forris posted 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Janiya McWilliams chipped in six points and eight rebounds and Hannah Tamou tallied four points and five rebounds to round out Sunday's leaders.

As a team, the Monarchs shot 20-of-53 from the field and 12-of-19 from the free throw line. GRCC posted a 19-of-58 effort from the floor and a 5-of-8 clip from the charity stripe.

As part of a total defensive effort, the Monarchs recorded 17 steals and forced 23 GRCC turnovers in the win.

The Monarchs face a pair of tough tests in the week ahead, beginning with a visit to No. 11 Lansing Community College on Wednesday (Dec. 3) for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The week wraps up with a trip to Mt. Pleasant's Morey Courts Recreation Center for a 1 p.m. contest against Mid Michigan College.
