JACKSON – Josh Hines eclipsed the 30-point mark for the second time this week and the fifth time this season to help lead No. 6 Macomb Men's Basketball to an 89-67 road win at Jackson College on Saturday (Feb. 1). Hines finished with 31, doing so on a 12-of-18 effort overall and a red-hot 6-of-8 clip from downtown. The redshirt sophomore guard added nine rebounds and five assists to cap off a week where he averaged 32 points and seven rebounds in a pair of wins.
Saturday's win lifted the sixth-ranked Monarchs to 19-2 overall and 6-1 at the end of the first half of MCCAA Eastern Conference play. The Monarchs visit Schoolcraft on Wednesday to begin the second round of league action.
Leading by 12 at the break, 43-31, the Monarchs started the second half on a 29-11 run to lead by as many as 29 in the road victory. The Monarchs ended the 22-point win with advantages in the following key categories: Rebounds (52-27), Offensive Rebounds (24-7), Second Chance Point (25-10), Points in the Paint (46-30) and Points Off Turnovers (16-8).
While Hines led the way in the scoring column,
Jotham Nweke paced the effort on the glass with a career-high 13 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. The sophomore wing added four points and four assists on the afternoon.
Malachi Irving had a career-high of his own with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go along with nine rebounds and four assists. The nine boards by Irving tied his career-best contest on the glass – a mark he set earlier in the week in a win over Wayne County.
Caron Williams tied his career-high with 14 points and added nine rebounds and three assists, while
Jalen Jenkins had 10 points, five assists and four rebounds and
Davion Guity posted 10 points and two boards.
