WARREN – Jotham Nweke capped it off with a
SportsCenter Top 10 worthy dunk as No. 9 Macomb Men's Basketball cruised to an 85-62 wire-to-wire home victory over the 19
th ranked St. Clair County Community College Skippers on Saturday (Feb. 15). The win vaulted the Monarchs to 21-4 overall and 8-3 tied with Henry Ford College atop the MCCAA Eastern Conference standings.
The stretch against tough competition continues on Wednesday as the Monarchs welcome Oakland Community College to the Sports & Expo Center for a critical conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Owls enter Wednesday's contest a game back of the Monarchs in the MCCAA East standings.
A red-hot start, combined with a consistent 40 minutes of attacking the glass and relentless defensive pressure, led the ninth-ranked Monarchs to the convincing win. The Monarchs led by as many as 25 in the second half in a game where the Blue & White outrebounded the Skippers by a commanding 55-30 differential, including a 21-9 edge on the offensive glass.
The impressive rebounding totals led to a 44-26 points in the paint advantage and a 21-2 edge in second chance points.
Jotham Nweke was a force throughout as the sophomore wing led all players with 21 points (9-12 FG, 3-5 3P) and 12 rebounds. Nweke recorded several dunks on the afternoon, none bigger than the exclamation point at the end via a lob from
Caron Williams.
Josh Hines posted his latest balanced effort with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while
Marlon Williams closed out the double-digit scorers for the Monarchs with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Lajuan Holloway had nine points (2-4 FG, 5-6 FT), [Caron] Williams had eight points and four rebounds and
Davion Guity chipped in with five points and three boards.
DaMaryon Fishburn hauled in eight rebounds to accompany four points and two blocks and
Jalen Jenkins dished out a game-high six assists to add to a stat line that included four points and three rebounds.
