Nweke’s Last Second Shot, Career-High 26 Points Sends Monarchs to Third Straight Saturday in Danville

Jotham Nweke poured in a career-best 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting to pace the Monarchs to their 29th win of the season.

DANVILLE, Ill. – Macomb Men's Basketball will play on the sixth and final day in Danville for the third straight season after Jotham Nweke sank a last second shot in the lane to give the Monarchs a 71-69 victory over Howard Community College on Friday (March 21). Nweke's shot, dropping with 1.3 seconds remaining, saw the sophomore wing finish with a career-best 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting to pace the action Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Monarchs will end their season in the fifth place game against the No. 8 seed, Davidson-Davie Community College. Tip-off for Saturday's fifth place contest is set for 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT.

A win on Saturday would be No. 30 of the campaign for the Monarchs and result in the first back-to-back 30-win seasons in program history.

As for Friday's fifth place semifinal tilt, the Monarchs led by double digits on a couple of occasions, but a resilient Howard team battled to the end until Nweke nailed the dagger floater in the lane with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Monarchs earned the hard-fought win thanks to a 44-28 advantage on the glass and a 34-26 edge in points in the paint.

Nweke's 26 points paced the attack and a balanced cast of Monarchs followed as Josh Hines recorded 10 points, Caron Williams had nine and DaMaryon Fishburn and Davion Guity chipped in with seven points each. Fishburn hauled in a team-best eight rebounds, Nweke grabbed seven, including five offensively, and Williams corralled six.

Malachi Irving posted an equal five points and five boards and Jalen Jenkins doled out a team-high five assists.
