PORT HURON, Mich. – Cold shooting and turnovers doomed No. 21 Macomb Men's Basketball in a 76-68 loss to Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Friday (Jan. 2) at the St. Clair County Community College (SC4) Skippers New Year's Classic.
The loss drops the Monarchs, a team still playing without four key players, including a pair of starters who combine for over 25 points per game, to 7-7 on the season.
Trailing 32-30 at the half, the Monarchs took an early second half lead before baskets would just not fall as the team shot 37.1% from the field over the final 20 minutes of action and 13.8% from 3-point range in the eight-point setback. The free throw line was also unkind to the Monarchs as the team shot 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the charity stripe.
Lajuan Holloway led the Monarchs with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting while
Caron Williams followed with 10 points.
Joey Angok debuted with nine points and was equaled in the scoring column by
Tabari Howard and
Jaylon Jackson with nine points each. Jackson hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds to pace the Monarchs on the glass.
The Monarchs take on Bay College, a team receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, Saturday at 1 p.m. at the SC4 Fieldhouse.
