Monarchs Grind Out 73-68 Win at Wayne County

Five Monarchs reached double figures scoring in the road win.

DETROIT, Mich. – The Macomb Women's Basketball team earned a gritty 73-68 road victory at Wayne County Community College District on Wednesday (Jan. 28) in Detroit. 

With the win, the Monarchs moved to 15-6 overall and 4-2 in MCCAA Eastern Conference play. The host Wildcats fell to 7-9 overall and 0-5 in conference action. 

The Monarchs led by as many as nine points in the opening quarter, but the Wildcats fought back to make it a five-point game after one at 24-19. The second period was a defensive struggle with the Wildcats outscoring the Monarchs, 14-12. With the game knotted at 33-33 late in the second quarter, MyKenzi Harris buried a triple to give the Monarchs a a 36-33 advantage and a much-needed boost entering the halftime locker room.

Third quarter action saw the Wildcats battle back and tie the game, 52-52, after outscoring the Monarchs 19-16 in the frame.

The Monarchs offensive came alive in the fourth as the Blue & White stretched their lead to double digits for the first time all game and withsood one last Wildcat comeback to earn the five-point victory.

Harris had an efficient day offensively for the Monarchs, recording 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Hannah Tamou registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Janiya McWilliams also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

A'Liyah Forris added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Curtisey Williams posted career highs in points (13) and rebounds (8) in 24 minutes off the bench.

The Monarchs earned the hard-fought road win behind key advantages in points off turnovers (26-9) and second chance points (23-9). 

The Monarchs wrap up the first half of conference play Saturday against Jackson College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from Wayne State University's Matthaei Center in Detroit.
