DETROIT, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball made it three wins in a row on Saturday (Jan. 31), defeating the visiting Jets of Jackson College, 69-64, inside Wayne State University's Matthaei Center in Detroit.
With the win, the Monarchs wrapped up the first half of MCCAA Eastern Conference play with a 5-2 record (16-6 overall). The Jets dropped to 4-3 in league play (13-9 overall) after suffering their first loss to the Monarchs since Nov. 11, 2017.
The signs for the Monarchs upending the Jets were there early as the hosts took a 20-17 lead after one quarter of play. A defensive-minded second quarter saw the teams play to a 12-12 deadlock, leading to the Monarchs owning a narrow 32-29 edge at the half.
A strong third quarter proved to be the difference as the Monarchs outscored the Jets by five in the frame to extend their lead to eight with 10:00 remaining at 50-42.
Despite being outscored 22-19 in the fourth, the Monarchs were able to hang on late behind a pair of clutch Janiya McWilliams free throws and earn their first win over the Jets since Jackson joined the Eastern Conference.
MyKenzi Harris paced the Monarchs with 22 points on a 4-of-9 effort from 3-point land. McWilliams followed Harris with another well-rounded game that featured 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. A'Liyah Forris registered 15 points and four assists while Hannah Tamou posted 10 points and six boards.
The Monarchs took advantage of Jet miscues throughout, tallying 19 points off turnovers in a game where they led by as many as 10 points.
As a team, the Monarchs shot 23-of-61 from the field, 7-of-20 from 3-point range and 16-of-24 from the free throw line.
The Monarchs open the second half of conference play Wednesday (Feb. 4) as they host No. 2 Schoolcraft College. Tip-off from the Matthaei Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
