Down to the Wire! Monarchs Hold on for 61-60 Road Win

Hannah Tamou led all scorers with 18 points.

FLINT, Mich. – Macomb Women's Basketball survived a late rally by Mott Community College Wednesday (Feb. 11) to earn a 61-60 MCCAA Eastern Conference victory inside the Ballenger Fieldhouse in Flint.

The host Bears had a chance to score the go-ahead basket twice in the final 14 seconds, but failed to convert as the Monarchs moved to 18-7 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The 18 wins is the most for the program since the unbeaten 32-0 team in 2019-20. With the win, the Monarchs have now won 14 straight over the Bears dating back to Feb. 25, 2019.

The Monarchs offense was clicking on all cylinders in the opening quarter, shooting out to a 24-12 lead. The Bears responded in the next quarter, outscoring the Monarchs by a 23-16 margin to bring the game within five at the break.

The Monarchs cooled in the second half as the Bears clamped down on defense to take the game down to the wire. Tied entering the fourth quarter, 49-49, the Monarchs held off a pair of late scoring chances by the Bears to leave Flint with a 61-60 victory.

Hannah Tamou led the Monarchs with 18 points and seven rebounds while A'Liyah Forris added 13 points, four boards and four steals. MyKenzi Harris netted 11 points and pulled down three rebounds to round out the Monarchs in double figures.

Ruby Sandison and Janiya McWilliams chipped in seven points each while McWilliams dished out a team-high six assists. Curtisey Williams pulled down a team-best nine rebounds in 22 minutes.

The Monarchs outrebounded the Bears, 39-29, and dished out 14 assists on the evening.

The Monarchs remain on the road Saturday (Feb. 14) at No. 23 St. Clair County Community College. Tip-off in Port Huron is set for 1 p.m.
