Men's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Down Wayne County, 73-65

Joey Angok and Dante Wimberly score 16 points each to lead the Monarchs.

DETROIT, Mich. – Macomb Men's Basketball celebrated Sophomore Day on Saturday (Feb. 21) with a 73-65 victory over Wayne County Community College District inside the Matthaei Center in Detroit. 

The win improved the Monarchs to 16-12 overall and 9-4 in MCCAA Eastern Conference play with one game remaining in regular season play. The Monarchs also moved to 7-0 at their temporary home on the campus of Wayne State University ahead of a likely home playoff contest on March 3. 

Wayne County fell to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in league action with the road setback. 

Prior to the game, Macomb honored its sophomore class consisting of Lajuan Holloway, Tabari Howard, Malachi Irving, Jaylon Jackson, Donald Wilburn and Caron Williams.

A defensive-minded first half saw the visiting Wildcats take a 27-22 lead into the half as neither team could get into a flow offensively. 

In the second half, the offense came alive for the Monarchs as they outscored the Wildcats, 51-38, over the final 20 minutes to earn the win. 

Joey Angok and Dante Wimberly scored 16 points each to lead the Monarchs on the offensive end. Angok scored 14 of his 16 in the second half and added seven rebounds, while Wimberly posted a new career-high to go along with four assists and a pair of rebounds. Howard and Irving netted nine points each with Irving also grabbing nine rebounds. Williams finished his afternoon with eight points and nine boards. 

The Monarchs shot 47.5% from the field and outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-24. 

The Monarchs wrap up the regular season Tuesday (Feb. 24) with a road game at Jackson College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
