Baseball Drops Doubleheader to No. 5 Kirkwood

Walks doomed the Monarchs in the opener while a pair of untimely errors proved costly in game two.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Macomb Baseball continued action at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla., on Tuesday (March 10), falling in a doubleheader to No. 5 Kirkwood Community College. The Eagles won game one 12-0 in five innings before fending off a gritty Monarchs effort in game two by a 7-3 final. The Monarchs finished the day with a 5-9 record while the fifth-ranked Eagles boosted their record to 17-2 overall.

GAME ONE: No. 5 Kirkwood 12, Macomb 0 (F/5 inn.)
The Eagles used an early Macomb error and a host of walks to score early and often in the 12-0 contest.

Cameron Simms recorded the Monarchs lone hit in game one while four pitchers saw action.

Nick Riebschleger was solid in relief, posting a team-high five strikeouts in two innings before giving way to Jacob Macks, who struck out one Eagle in the fifth inning.

GAME TWO: No. 5 Kirkwood 7, Macomb 3
The teams were deadlocked in a scoreless affair through the first three innings before the Monarchs broke through with a two-run fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles responded in the home half, scoring four, two of which came in via an error, to take a 4-2 lead. The Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to earn the 7-3 win.

Marwynn Matthews Jr was 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two stolen bases. Buster Debol was also 1-for-3 with an RBI.

On the mound, Brendan Przybycki got the start and was in a groove before running into error-fueled trouble in the fourth. The sophomore struck out six batters in just under four innings of work and only walked one in his outing. Jacob Turner pitched the final two-and-a-third for the Monarchs.

UP NEXT:
Macomb wraps up the Florida portion of their spring break trip with a doubleheader against Lake Region State College on Wednesday (March 11). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Chain of Lakes Park (Field 2).
