Monarchs Earn Second Consecutive Run Rule Victory, Defeat Mott 12-1 in Six Innings

Vito Zito hit a two-run walk-off home run in bottom of the sixth inning to send the Monarchs to 2-0 in the MCCAA East.

UTICA, Mich. – Macomb Baseball earned their second consecutive run rule victory with a 12-1 triumph in six innings over Mott Community College on Friday (March 20).

With the win, the Monarchs are now 8-10 overall and 2-0 in MCCAA Eastern Conference action after posting a pair of run-rule wins in six innings on back-to-back days.

After Mott plated a run in the top of the first, the Monarchs responded with four error-aided runs in the home half to take an early 4-1 lead.

The Monarchs plated one more in the third and broke the game open with a five-run fifth before Vito Zito walked it off with a pinch hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth for the 12-1 win. The walk-off by Zito was the first of his collegiate career.

Zackary Grinde led the Macomb offense with a blistering 3-for-3 performance that included his second home run in a Monarch uniform and a double. Grinde drove in three runs and came around to score three as the sophomore transfer continues to heat up in conference play.

Dominic Cavacini posted a 2-for-4 day with three runs scored while Buster Debol, Zach Freitag, Aidan Miller and Peyton Rich all drove in a run each.

After allowing a run in the first inning, Johnathan Meyette settled in and struck out four Bears in six innings of work to post his second win of the campaign. For the second time in as many days, a Monarch starter went the distance and didn't walk a batter.

The Monarchs are back in action Saturday (March 21) as they head to The Corner Ballpark to take on Henry Ford College in a single 9-inning contest. The MCCAA East tilt is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
