DETROIT, Mich. – 5-0 in the MCCAA East! Macomb Baseball posted an 11-1 victory over Schoolcraft College at The Corner Ballpark in Detroit on Saturday (March 28) behind a stellar showing from Greg Burns and timely hitting, sparked by a third inning grand slam by Vito Zito.
With the win, the Monarchs moved to 13-10 overall and swept the 9-inning portion of MCCAA East play as part of a seven-game winning streak.
Saturday's tilt at The Corner was a scoreless affair early before the Monarchs broke the game wide open with a six-run top of the third that was capped off by Zito's first collegiate grand slam. The two-out grand slam was the former De La Salle standout's second home run as a Monarch.
The host Ocelots responded with a run in the home half, but it was all Burns would allow in his latest start as the freshman right-handed pitcher out of Northville struck out a career-high 10 batters while scattering two hits to move to 4-1 on the season.
After tacking on a run in the sixth, the Monarchs closed the game strong with a four-run ninth to post 10-or-more runs in a game for the ninth time this season and the fourth time in five conference contests.
While Zito stole the show with his third-inning grand slam, five Monarchs recorded two-hit games as Brett Leonard, Marwynn Matthews Jr, Aidan Miller, Peyton Rich and Lochlan Stoudt accounted for 10 of the Blue & White's 15 hits on the afternoon.
Rich drove in a pair as part of a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and Matthews went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a sac bunt and a run scored. Leonard was 2-for-4 with a double, while Miller and Stoudt went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a combined three runs scored.
Dominic Cavacini hit a 3-RBI double in the ninth to cap off an 11-run, 15-hit day for the Monarchs.
On the mound, Burns was followed by a trio of solid relief appearances out of
Connor O'Neil,
Logan Ion and
Aidan Manzella. In total, the three relievers struck out two while only surrendering one hit in three scoreless innings of work.
The Monarchs will take a break from conference play to host Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) power Cuyahoga Community College on Monday (March 30) in Warren. First pitch for the non-conference doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. with live stream coverage available on MacombMonarchs.com/Watch.
