Kirk Carolan, was the result of a resilient team effort and a game-altering run in the second quarter.
Trailing 10-9 after 10 minutes of play, the Monarchs fell behind by as many as six midway through the second quarter before going on an impressive 19-2 run to flip a 17-11 deficit into a 30-19 lead. Spanning four minutes, the 19-2 run was the difference in Friday's season-opening tilt as the Monarchs took the lead and never looked back in the eight-point triumph.
Janiya McWilliams (Detroit, Mich./Warren Fitzgerald) played a huge role in the second quarter outburst on the way to tying the team-high in points with 13 and pulling down a team-best nine rebounds.
Asiyah Jihad (Farmington, Mich./North Farmington) matched McWilliams in the points column with 13 while stuffing the stat sheet with seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Vivian Urhobara (Lagos, Nigeria/Divine Light Schools) was next with eight points and five rebounds, all coming in the second half, while
Vanessa Galovich (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica) went for seven points, five rebounds and two steals on the night.
A'Liyah Forris (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) ripped away a team-leading six steals and
Sydney Garon (Shelby Twp., Mich./Henry Ford II) hauled in eight rebounds to round out Friday's leaders.
The 1-0 Monarchs will look to close out their season-opening trip to Indiana with a win when they take on Lincoln Trail College (Ill.) at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
