BY THE NUMBERS: 16
Redshirt freshman guard
Josh Hines connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the final 3.6 seconds of regulation, including one to beat the buzzer and send the game to overtime, in an 85-81 OT win at No. 13 SC4 on Saturday. In all, Hines poured in 16 of his team-high 20 points over the final 5:03.6 of game action to lift the Monarchs to pivotal road victory.
BY THE NUMBERS: 2
Thanks in large part to Hines' heroics, the Monarchs now own a commanding lead atop the MCCAA Eastern Conference and are
two (2) wins away from winning the league championship outright. A win on Wednesday will clinch at least a share of the MCCAA East while two wins this week will secure the program's second conference title in three seasons.
TIME TO WIN A TITLE!
The Monarchs enter the week two wins away from securing their second outright MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship in the past three seasons (would be only the third outright title overall). Winning the East would send the Monarchs to the MCCAA Championship, a two-day event vs. the West and North Champions at the site of the North Champion on March 1 & 2.
UNSELFISH TEAM BASKETBALL
Juwan Maxey leads five in double figures at 15.8 points per game (PPG), followed by
Tymias Williams who nets 14.3 PPG.
Parker Day and
Nate Brown are next at 12.8 and 12.1 PPG, respectively, while
Josh Hines checks in at 12.0 PPG. The balance continues with the following averages:
Tate MacKenzie (8.4),
Jotham Nweke (8.3),
Kyle Millender (8.2),
Justin James (7.6),
Marlon Williams (5.8) and
DaMaryon Fishburn (5.1).
THE EAST'S TOP TEAM
Winning the East not only sends Macomb to the MCCAA Championship—which as of now would be held at Bay College in Escanaba on March 1 & 2—it would place the Monarchs as the top seed in the Great Lakes District B Tournament and secure a first-round bye. The Monarchs first district tournament game would be March 8 at Mott CC in the semifinals.
SOPHOMORE DAY IS SATURDAY
Men's Basketball will hold their Sophomore Day ceremony prior to this Saturday's home finale against Wayne County. The ceremony will take place five minutes before tip-off and will honor the careers of sophomores
Nate Brown,
Parker Day,
Justin James,
Juwan Maxey,
Kyle Millender and
Tymias Williams.
A PROVEN WINNING FORMULA
The Monarchs continued to attack the glass last week on their way to huge road wins at Mott and then No. 13 SC4. The Monarchs outrebounded both opponents to boost their record to an unblemished 21-0 when outrebounding the competition. The team is 0-3 when outrebounded by the opposition. The Blue & White also moved to 19-0 when shooting 45% or better this season.
REGULAR SEASON WINDS DOWN
We are down to the final three games of the regular season as the Monarchs visit Auburn Hills for a 7:30 p.m. tilt against OCC Wednesday before returning home for on Saturday at 3 p.m. to take on Wayne County. The regular season wraps up at Jackson on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at 7:30 p.m. The Monarchs will be going for the season sweep against all three opponents after winning the first game against the three by an average of 33.3 PPG.
ADDITIONAL STAT LEADERS
Tymias Williams leads four Monarchs averaging six or rebounds per game (RPG) at 7.3 per contest, followed by
Parker Day (7.1),
Tate MacKenzie (6.4) and
Juwan Maxey (6.0).
Justin James has dished out a team-best 89 assists (3.7 APG) and leads the way in steals with 44, while Maxey has drained a team-leading 72 3-pointers at a 43.1% clip.
