BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – A program on the rise! Macomb Men's Cross Country continued its ascension on Saturday (Sept. 7) with a stellar performance at Ferris State University's Ray Helsing Invitational. The Monarchs finished second overall with a team score of 69, trailing only the host Bulldogs. The team score was eight points ahead of the third place team and 22 better than the next junior college program in the field.
In all, Saturday's team effort led the Monarchs to a better team finish than three total teams from the junior college ranks—all from the MCCAA.
With marked improvement all around, the Monarchs were once again paced by
Jack DeWaele (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) who checked in 16
th in a tough field with an 8K time of 27:43.
Dylan Penberthy (New Haven, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) improved greatly from week one with an 18
th place finish and time of 28:18, while his twin brother
Brandon Penberthy (New Haven, Mich./L'Anse Creuse North) followed closely at 28:42 to finish in 21
st overall.
Gabe Rusch (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) was one second behind the latter Penberthy twin at 28:43 to check in 22
nd, while
Carson Gilbertson (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) earned a 26
th place finish after clocking in at 28:59.

Next up for the Monarchs is the program's first home meet in over a decade as the Blue & White are set to host the MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship on Sept. 20 at Stony Creek Metropark. We will have more on this race in the days leading up to the competition.
