GOODELLS, Mich. – The 14
th ranked Macomb men's cross country team opened the 2025 season on Friday (Aug. 29) by leading all NJCAA teams at the Skippers Cross Country Showcase hosted by St. Clair County Community College (SC4).
The Monarchs scored 49 points for second overall in the team standings, only finishing behind four-year school and NAIA member, Lawrence Technological University, who posted a winning score of 27 points.
With the team score of 49, the Monarchs finished ahead of two of their ranked counterparts in the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll as No. 18 Grand Rapids Community College was third with 85 points, while the host and 13
th ranked Skippers were fourth with 107 points. Oakland Community College rounded out the top five of the nine-team event with a score of 148 points.
Jacob Kosidlo led the Monarchs in his first collegiate race, finishing sixth place individually with an 8K time of 27:26.1. Kosidlo's high school teammate,
Michael Nivala Jr., was the next Macomb runner to cross the line, posting a time of 27:35.2 for an eighth place finish in his Monarch debut. Returning NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association All-American,
Brandon Penberthy, finished right behind Nivala Jr. in ninth place in 27:35.4.
At the conclusion of the race, Kosidlo, Nivala Jr. and Penberthy were honored by SC4 as top 10 finishers.
Jack DeWaele was next in 14th place with a time of 28:36.0, while
Lucas LaMilza capped off the scoring in 16th with a time of 28:37.2.
Mathieu Fortier recorded a 34th place finish, crossing the line at 30:10.2.
Macomb will look to build on its strong start when they travel to Ferris State for the Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 6th). The meet will be held at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
