GOODELLS, Mich. – Debuting in style!
Grace Wessel impressed in her debut for Macomb women's cross country on Friday (Aug. 29) as the sophomore took home first place with a 5K PR time of 19:49.1. Wessel finished 35 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, doing so by pulling away from the field at the midway point and never looking back at St. Clair County Community College's (SC4) Skippers Showcase.
The first place effort led a cast of three Monarchs in the top 10 as talented returners
Emma Dell and
Erin Rowan finished in seventh and 10
th place, respectfully, at the season-opening race. Dell crossed the finish line at 20:52.5 and Rowan followed closely at 21:10.2.
Wessel, Dell and Rowan were honored for their top 10 finishes by SC4 following Friday's event.
A trio of newcomers were next for the Monarchs as
Amber Watta crossed the line in 22nd place, running 21:55.4 in her collegiate debut, while
Erin Leverenz completed the scoring with a 39th place finish and time of 24:24.7.
Arianna Stiles was 45th after clocking in at 26:41.3, while returner
Vanessa Sayers finished 50th with a time of 28:23.8.
As a team, the Monarchs finished fourth with 68 points, one point behind both Lawrence Tech and host SC4 who finished in a second-place tie. Grand Rapids Community College won the event with 47 points.
The Monarchs are back in action next Saturday (Sept. 6) at the Ray Helsing Ferris State Bulldog Invitational from the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
