UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Macomb Track & Field continued their indoor season on Friday (Jan. 23) as they traveled back to Saginaw Valley State University for the Doug Hansen Open. The Monarch men and women largely competed in the 800m and mile events and posted a successful day overall. 

Michael Nivala Jr. won the men's mile with a career PR of 4:26. The Lakeland High School product defeated a host of NCAA DII and DIII competition en route to the winning the event. 

Jack DeWaele registered a top-five finish in the mile with a time of 4:48, while Mathieu Fortier crossed the line in 5:22 to place 11th. 

In the men's 800m, DeWaele and Nivala ran identical times of 2:12. Brandon Penberthy posted a time of 2:17 in his first action of the season, while Daryl Winters III posted a time of 2:33. Winters also competed in the 400m dash and recorded a time of 54.72 seconds. 

On the women's side, Erin Rowan enjoyed a career day for the Monarchs, running a PR in the mile (5:37) and tying her PR in the 800m (2:33). The Sterling Heights native had a runner-up finish in the 800m event, while Emma Dell wasn't far behind in third place with a time of 2:36. 

Dell led Macomb in the women's mile with a time of 5:35. Amber Watta crossed the line in 6:23 and Erin Leverenz checked in at 6:47. 

The Monarchs will have next weekend off before returning to action Feb. 7 at the Mike Lints Alumni Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University. The meet will begin at 1:30 p.m.
